divide between Alberta
and British Columbia.
The surrounding scenery
is splendid - glassy
lakes, sheer mountain
ridges and snow-covered
forests - and there's the
chance to spot Bighorn
sheep, black bear and hoary marmots, as well as
a variety of pretty alpine plants.

Another equally remote ski lodge is Brewster's
Shadow Lake Lodge, also in Banff National
Park. From the trailhead of the Trans-Canada
Highway, guests will need to cross-country
ski or snow-shoe the 14km trail to the lodge,
where you'll be welcomed with a much-needed
afternoon tea of home-made bread, scones and
cakes.
Shadow Lake Lodge is a collection of cosy
cabins nestled in the pine trees; each cabin is
equipped with solar panelling, washbasins and
comfortable beds, and has panoramic views
across the mountains and forest. Evenings
are snug and relaxed, with roaring fires and
enormous, home-cooked meals - stoking guests
up for a full day in the snow the next day.
And you'll need the energy: there are four main
cross-country skiing routes from Shadow Lake
