009 Caerfai
Campsite,
pembrokeshire
Take a peek out of
your tent and you'll
see the beautiful
Caerfai Bay and
beyond that the rocky
coastline of St Brides.
Three fields at this
organic (mostly dairy)
farm near St David's
on the Pembrokeshire
coast are given over
to camping, from
Whitsun (around
mid-to late May) until
late September. The
showers are heated
by solar-thermal
panels, there's a wind
turbine to help power
the lights in the toilet
block, drinking water
comes from the farm's
own borehole and
there are full recycling facilities. At the entrance
to the campsite is a small shop, which sells
organic cheeses and milk from the farm as well
as other camping food essentials. The campsite is
on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Footpath - one of
Britain's best walks - and it's just a short walk
down to the sheltered, sandy beach at Caerfai
Bay.
five “paddocks” for pitching tents, which are
separated by landscaped trees planted by the
owners. The campsite has a strict eco-policy:
the toilet block is solar-powered and though you
should expect to share the campsite with camper
vans (there's also a backpackers' hostel on site),
it is free from caravans and noisy generators.
A few kilometres along the coast is Holkham
Beach, used by the monarchy when they stay at
nearby Sandringham. It's a wonderfully open
beach with long dunes backed by a tall, shady
pine forest and is one of the largest nature
reserves in the country.
