to allow natural sea breezes to waft in. With
just seven bandas available, there are never
more than fourteen guests on the island in the
evening. Candlelit dinner is served in the former
lighthouse keeper's home.
Despite its luxury, Chumbe somehow manages
to pull off being an environmental educational
establishment too. It runs a comprehensive
school programme with courses in marine
biology, forest ecology and environmental
protection. But while the commitment to
conservation is impressive, it is not forced
upon you; the work goes on in the background
while you enjoy the tropical idyll. In the
privacy of your banda you can lie back in your
hammock, watch the palm trees sway and listen
to the water lap against the shore. The only
disturbance might be the school kids as they
run past chatting excitedly about what they've
discovered in the rock pools and along the reef.
Need to know There are
eight to ten crossings a
day from Dar Es Salaam
to Stone Town, Zanzibar
(1.5-2hr, around US$35
one-way) and you can
buy tickets on arrival
at the port. Ferries to
Chumbe depart from
Mbweni Ruins Hotel, 7km
south of Stone Town,
at 10am daily (45min,
around US$75, including
lunch and activities).
