Manze's started baking pies in 1892 and is the oldest pie and mash shop still stand-
ing. Michele Manze, the original owner's son-in-law, bought the premises in 1902
and, amazingly, the café still has its original marble tables, wooden benches, green
and white wall tiles and pristine shop fittings. The Manzes came from Italy, and ini-
tially sold ice creams in the premises next door until they bought the shop. Michele's
grandsons now run the shop and café, keeping their secret liquor recipe in the fam-
ily. Here you can pick up some chilled jellied eels or a hot meat or vegetarian pie,
baked fresh every day on the premises. Sit down and reminisce about the area with
a beef and gravy pie, a glass of something sweet and fizzy and a plate of hot stewed
eels.
