competition of the dual-roles finally results in the slightly negative effect of SO 2
on the NO 2 removal efficiency.

Fig. 4.12 uncovers the SO 2 effect on the NO 2 absorption products. It can be
seen that with increasing SO 2 from 0 to 500 ppm, both the NO 2 and NO 3
concentrations vary slightly all the while (i.e., a slight decrease from 4.9×10 4 to
4.5×10 4 mol/L and the corresponding increase from 5×10 -6 to 1.1×10 -5 mol/L for
the former and latter, respectively). These changes indicate that the proportion of
the NO 2 redox reactions becomes smaller and that of the NO 2 hydrolysis is
enhanced.
