The incidences of the different causes of failure are summarised in Figure
14.15.
The geographic location and environment had a significant influence
on performance of repairs. As expected, repairs in coastal and industrial
environments performed very poorly. On the other hand it was surprising
that repairs in an urban environment were more successful than those in a
rural environment.
The influence of environment on repair performance is summarised in
Figure 14.16.
14.7 Concluding remarks
The generally poor performance of concrete repairs comes as no surprise to
practitioners. Moreover this is despite the volume of research, development
of improved repair materials, and guides to good practice that have been
produced.
Some of the trends highlighted by the survey and comments by the
respondents are, however, helpful in indicating ways to make improvements
in the future. There is a general view that pressures on costs cause repairers
to take cheaper options, employ less-skilled labour, and carry out work in
