14.3 Problems requiring repair
The case histories involved a variety of initial problems requiring the repair
work. In some there was more than one problem reported, for example
corrosion and consequential loss of strength through reduced section in
the reinforcement bars. Corrosion, frost damage and cracking could also
occur together. In these cases it was usually possible to identify the primary
problem but in the case of corrosion and cracking it was difficult to decide
whether cracking had led to the corrosion or vice versa.
Repair is defined as the restoration of the structure to its initial durability
and strength. It follows that strengthening to a level above the initial design
value is excluded from the case histories.
