Still other high-growth subindustries of this decade were management consult-
ing groups such as Accenture and outsource groups such as CAI. This decade
also witnessed rapid increases in commercial COTS and the arrival of some open-
source packages.
This was the last decade before the internet and the World Wide Web changed
the fundamental nature of human communications and social interaction. During
the 1980s, people still had more live friends than remote friends known only by
web contact. They still used their telephones more for conversations than for tex-
ting. Smartphones were still in the future.
