The companies cited in this decade are only samples. Many other companies
were also formed during the 1980s. This decade saw the almost universal adoption
of computers and software as the key business tools of all major companies and
government agencies. The use of personal computers as private tools also grew
rapidly thanks to the IBM PC (and its many clones) and the Apple computer.
The Growth of Software During the 1980s
Software continued to grow explosively during this decade. Table 7.4 shows the
approximate numbers of software applications developed in the United States in
the 1980s.
