Behind the Bund
MISSIONARY ROW
From the Beijing Road entrance of the Peninsula Shanghai 1 [map] (Ban Dao Fandian;
www.peninsula.com ), it's just a few steps west to the foot of Yuanmingyuan Road, old
Shanghai's 'Missionary Row'. Before 1949, missionaries made up a significant percentage of
China's foreign population, and Shanghai was the centre of the thriving enterprise. This
stretch of buildings housed the offices of many missions.
Look carefully at the carved designs around the doorframe of the YWCA Building 2
[map] (133 Yuanmingyuan Road): you can still make out the organisation's logo. The build-
ing's Chinese Art Deco design was created by Chinese-American architect Poy Gum Lee,
and includes an interior with bright green and red tiles with the stylised character for 'long
