In-Depth Information
The temple's main draw is the pair of legendary jade Buddhas, which are housed in two
separate halls. On the second floor of the Jade Buddha Hall is the sacred Sakyamuni
Buddha, which measures a vast 1.92m (6.5ft) and rests in a glass case. The creamy white,
almost luminous statue of the beatifically smiling jade Buddha, draped with a gem-encrusted
robe and seated in the lotus position, shows Buddha at the moment of enlightenment.
On the ground floor of the Hall of the Reclining Buddha is the other smaller, but much
more exquisite reclining jade Buddha (96cm/37in), depicting a tranquil Sakyamuni with the
same beatific smile at the moment of death. The larger reclining Buddha opposite is a pol-
ished stone version of the original.
