lobby, including the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein, and you can head to through
the gloriously creaky antique hallways to the third floor, where a vaulted Tudor-style hall
holds a mini museum of hotel artefacts and more archival images. In the former front lawn of
the Astor House, by the riverside, is the eye-catching villa-style Russian Consulate, dating
back to 1916.
Head across the road to the 22-storey Art Deco Broadway Mansions 3 [map] (Shanghai
Dasha; 20 Suzhou Road North; www.broadwaymansions.com ), one of Asia's first high-rises.
Built as an apartment block in 1934 and now a hotel, it was the location of the wartime For-
eign Correspondents Club, and from its offices on the top six floors members wrote about
some of Shanghai's most memorable events, including watching Marshal Chen Yi and his
soldiers march in to liberate Shanghai. Head up to the 18th-floor terrace for beautiful views of
Suzhou Creek, the Bund and Pudong.
SHANGHAI POSTAL MUSEUM
Head west about a block to the Shanghai Postal Museum 4 [map] (Shanghai Youzheng
Bowuguan; 250 Suzhou Road North; Wed, Thur, Sat, Sun 9am-5pm; free; for more informa-
tion, click here ) , the old International Settlement General Post Office and still Shanghai's
main post office. The landscaped rooftop terrace (open only occasionally) affords a bird's-eye
view of Suzhou Creek, Pudong, the area behind the Bund and the spreading wings of Em-
bankment House (for more information, click here ) a block west. Its 194 apartments once
made it Shanghai's largest apartment block, and today several have been wonderfully re-
stored and are available for short stays. If you're feeling hungry, the museum-like gallery of
