analytic requirements. BWA as an appliance is a combination of hardware and software that
moves identified data onto the BWA, organizes and indexes it differently than done in the core
SAP NetWeaver BW database, and then integrates it with the SAP NetWeaver BW report-
ing tools to read the data via the query engine. BWA is specifically meant for speeding up the
responsiveness of queries and reports written against SAP NetWeaver BW. SAP HANA database
is an enhancement over BWA.
SAP HANA in-memory database solution is a combination of hardware and software that
optimizes row-based, column-based, and object-based database technologies to exploit parallel
processing capabilities. SAP HANA is a flexible, data source-independent toolset that enables
compressing and handling of large volumes of data in real time, without the need to aggregate
or create highly complex physical data models. SAP HANA uses column-based organization for
storing and processing data—to update a field in a column-based format, the system has to find
the right column and then the right row for the update rendering the process as inefficient. SAP
HANA circumvents this problem by inserting a new information instead of updating it. Moreover,
using the column structure of data obviates the need to retrieve every possible piece of information
in a record for every report requirement, thus making it that much faster and more efficient than
traditional row-based access.
SAP HANA has the power to bring together and analyze billions of rows of information in a
subsecond. The most common uses for SAP HANA include the following:
Call detail record analysis
Point of sale analysis
Comprehensive understanding of customer's individual needs, habits, and preferences
Quality and production analysis
Fraud/risk management and modeling
SAP HANA comes in two versions, namely, stand-alone version and BW version.
14.10.4.1 Stand-alone SAP HANA
This is also known as SAP HANA 1.0 or the enterprise version of SAP HANA. In this version,
the organization implements a stand-alone instance of SAP HANA to address a new reporting or
analytic need. These stand-alone installations may address a point or single solution and, therefore,
could add tremendous value to the organization.
In this case, the organization needs to get the data into SAP HANA via extract, transform, and
load (ETL) processes, create the data model, install a BI tool, and create the reports.
14.10.4.2 SAP HANA for BW
This scenario is also known as SAP HANA 2.0 or SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA.
In this version, the organization is looking to optimize the performance of your existing SAP
NetWeaver BW system by replacing their existing database (Oracle, DB2, etc.) with a SAP HANA
database.
In this case, the organization is able to leverage all investment of times and efforts expended
in implementing the SAP NetWeaver BW system along with the corresponding reports; it has to
only replace their existing database with SAP HANA.
