All front office deployments have performance and scalability requirements that must be met to
support efficient business operations and commitments on completing the required workloads on
schedule. Good performance is not only important to ensure user satisfaction and the ongoing use
of the application but is also critical to the efficiencies and operating costs of the supported busi-
ness processes. All front office deployments also have application scalability requirements not only
in terms of the total number of users, processes, and data volumes that can be supported but also
in terms of the deployed network, server, and other resources to control deployment costs.
This chapter also introduces new areas of applications that have significant potential for the
future, namely, mobile applications, context-aware applications, big data applications and social
networks based applications.
