In-Depth Information
To obtain data from the corresponding systems, SAP MDM supplies specific adapters for dif-
ferent Master Data Client (MDC) systems like SAP Enterprise, SAP CRM, or SAP SRM.
SAP MDM supports the following scenarios:
MDM Consolidation entails the process of consolidating master data used across differ-
ent application systems and transferring the information regarding identical data objects
to SAP BI to enable an accurate evaluation of operational status of the enterprise. MDM
Consolidation enables identification of identical or similar master data objects across differ-
ent systems, so that a cleanup can be affected whenever necessary.
MDM Harmonization extends the consolidation process to include accurate (i.e., correct,
consistent, current, and complete) maintenance and dissemination of the master data objects
across all systems within the enterprise. This ensures that all client systems are provided with
accurate master data and that all business processes are carried out accurately. However,
MDM Harmonization also allows client applications to supplement the global attributes of
the disseminated data objects with additional local attributes.
MDM Centralization is similar to the harmonization process except that the maintenance
and dissemination of master data objects is allowed only from a central server. Unlike har-
monization, it does not permit direct maintenance or extension with local attributes in local
systems.
GOLDEN SOURCES OF DATA
MDM Harmonization enables what is termed as golden sources of enterprise data.
Data entities are duplicated in various tables across multiple systems. However, for
each of these entities, there is one place where they are primarily created and updated;
this is termed as the golden source for those data. Using the golden source of data obviates
the need for ensuring consolidation, consistency, currency, correctness, or completeness of
the data items, which is of enormous advantage especially in the case of analytical applica-
tions. Thus, the golden source of data functions as the primary source of those data across
all the tables and systems in the enterprise.
10.4.3 Process Integration
Process integration supports seamless business processes in a heterogeneous environment enabling
definition, control, and monitoring of cross system business processes.
10.4.3.1 Integration Broker: SAP NetWeaverExchange Infrastructure (XI)
SAP NetWeaverExchange Infrastructure (XI), which is now known as SAP NetWeaver Process
Integration (PI), is the primary enabler of the cross system business processes. It offers services that
are critical in a heterogeneous environment like runtime infrastructure for exchanging messages
(with facility for transforming messages between sender and recipient), configuration options for
controlling collaborative processes and message flow, design and execution of cross system busi-
ness processes, and B2B support.
SAP XI is based on an open architecture and primarily uses open standards (associated with
XML and Java) to interface with non-SAP systems to and from the Integration Server between
