In-Depth Information
SAP Mobile Infrastructure provides tools for data synchronization and replication for synchroniz-
ing between the client devices and back-end servers.
SAP Mobile Server has J2EE and Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP) server
components that run, respectively, on the J2EE and ABAP stacks of the SAP NetWeaver Application
Server (AS). The J2EE server component receives compressed data from the mobile client device
via HTTPS and forwards it to the ABAP server component. The ABAP server component carries
out relevant tasks such as managing data containers and identifying and then calling the relevant
back-end applications for processing the data received from the mobile client devices. The ABAP
server components are also responsible for the major part of the synchronization process.
10.4.1.2 Enterprise Portal
In the course of his or her daily routine, a user may have to access the Internet, intranet, or sev-
eral incompatible operational, business, and decision-support applications. Users may find them-
selves overwhelmed with information and technology options that may have to be exercised to
move across these various resources. Users may dissipate enormous amounts of time and effort in
switching between applications and entering passwords and other identification information every
time. SAP Enterprise Portal (EP) solves these problems by devising a single gateway to all such
resources. Users have the convenience of a single sign-on accessible from anywhere using only a
single password.
SAP EP allows for a consistent and role-based access to SAP and non-SAP applications, exter-
nal applications, repositories, databases, and services within and outside of enterprises—all inte-
grated in a uniform user experience. It includes tools that enable management, analysis, and
correlation of this information with each other as well as for exchanging it to work more effec-
tively as teams.
SAP EP solves the problem of information logistics caused by the use of diverse applications.
This enables users to focus more on the content, context, and relevance of corporate information,
rather than on the complexities of accessing from diverse, autonomous, and often proprietary
sources, which leads to better decisions. Inevitably, these later factors restrict the access of valu-
able information and hence deprive a majority of personnel from playing a more effective role in
the organization. EP enables all users to subscribe, create, design, value add, publish, collaborate,
reuse, and share information using tools and formats with which they are more familiar and
comfortable.
EP has the following efficiency and productivity-multiplying features:
Interactive and secure access from anywhere
Explicit and implicit subscribe and publish facilities that enables users to schedule receipts
when sending of just-in-time (JIT) information from or to identified resources
A single point of interactive access via a Web browser to both internal and external industry-
specific and company-specific applications, content, and services
A wide variety of information formats, including relational database tables, multidimen-
sional databases, and decision-processing objects like queries, reports, word-processing
documents, spreadsheets, images, video, audio, HTML and XML pages, and e-mail
messages
Personalized, easy, uniform, role-specific, company-specific, industry-specific user interfaces
(with options for multiple roles)
