The building once housed a full-service grocery store with a barn in the back
to house delivery carriages. Devillier, who's won much acclaim for his culin-
ary creativity (can you say blue-crab beignets?), was named a James Beard
Award finalist in 2012, 2013, and 2014 for Best Chef: South.
• Walk two blocks to the corner of Marengo Street, where you'll see Neal Auc-
tion Company to the right. Established in 1983, it holds auctions six times a
year, with each comprising fine art and antiques from estates, private collec-
tions, and cultural institutions. During the next stretch, you'll pass several
high-end clothing boutiques, including the Uptown shop of New Orleans jew-
elry designer Mignon Faget, at the corner of Magazine and Peniston.
• Yet another award-winning restaurant, the French- and Italian-inspired Li-
lette, has sat at the corner of Magazine and Antonine since 2000. Housed in a
one-time apothecary, Lilette was once dubbed “the sexiest dining room in
New Orleans” by Travel & Leisure magazine. Owner and chef John Harris
has been named a James Beard finalist for Best Chef: South, and in 2002,
Food & Wine named him one of the best new chefs in America.
• In the next block, at 3606 Magazine St., is the home of WRBH, the city's ra-
dio station for the blind and visually impaired. The station's mission is “to
turn the written word into the spoken word so that the blind and print han-
dicapped receive the same ease of access to current information as their
sighted peers.” WRBH is the only full-time reading service on the FM dial in
the United States, and one of only three in the world. Because of the station's
streaming capability, it reaches people worldwide.
• Walk three blocks to Louisiana Avenue and catch RTA Bus #11 for your trip
back to the starting point. Of course, if you're up to it, feel free to walk bey-
ond Louisiana before making the trek back.
