In-Depth Information
Cross Third Street. Across the street, at 2523 Prytania, is the old Our Moth-
er of Perpetual Help, a one-time chapel that best-selling author Anne Rice at-
tended as a child and later bought and converted to a private residence. At
more than 13,000 square feet, the house was said to be too small for Rice,
who went on to buy and renovate an old orphanage on nearby Napoleon Av-
enue. Actor Nicolas Cage once owned not only this house but also the
LaLaurie House in the Lower French Quarter (see Walk 5 ), but he lost both
to foreclosure in 2009.
Continue walking to 2507 Prytania, the Maddox-Mclendon House, a Greek
Revival mansion built for Joseph H. Maddox, owner of the New Orleans
Daily Crescent newspaper, in the 1850s. The interior, which was used in the
Jamie Foxx-Leonardo DiCaprio movie Django Unchained, features a grand
staircase made of mahogany, cypress, and walnut; Baccarat crystal chandeli-
ers; and an opulent ballroom with hand-painted ceilings, among other amen-
ities.
At 2504 Prytania is the New Orleans Women's Opera Guild Home, which
was built in 1859 for Edward A. Davis and donated to the Women's Guild of
the New Orleans Opera Association in 1965. The Greek Revival home was
designed by noted architect William A. Freret and is open for public tours on
Mondays.
Walk one block to 2406 Prytania, the home of French consul general Grégor
Trumel and his family. Built in 1905 by attorney John May, the Colonial
Revival house was purchased by the Republic of France in 1957 and has
housed its consul ever since. According to the Preservation Resource Center,
it has undergone numerous renovations over the years but continues to oper-
ate as a symbol of the connection and commitment between Louisiana and
France.
Cross First Street. The house directly across Prytania is the Bradish Johnson
House, a one-time private residence that now serves as the main building for
Louise S. McGehee School, an independent girls' school. The house was de-
signed by James Freret and built in 1872 for wealthy sugar magnate Bradish
Johnson. Today, it houses McGehee libraries, classrooms, and the office of
the headmistress.
Turn right on First Street. In the middle of the block, at 1420 First St., is the
home of former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning. It is also
the childhood home of Manning's three sons, including NFL quarterbacks
