Algiers Point is one of those “best kept secret” kinds of neighborhoods—one that mixes the
charm and character of Uptown New Orleans with the affordability and quaintness of
small-town America. For some house hunters, its location on the West Bank of the Missis-
sippi River is an immediate turnoff. For others, it's the perfect landing spot.
Typically referred to as “The Point,” Algiers Point is nestled within Algiers, the only part
of New Orleans located on the West Bank. Listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, it is the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans—the French Quarter is
first—and while most of it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1895, its rebuilt residences,
from Creole cottages to Greek Revivals, give it the feel of a 19th-century village.
One of Algiers Point's biggest draws is the Algiers-Canal Street ferry, which runs all day
long and can carry pedestrians and bicyclists to either side of the river in a matter of
minutes. Residents often boast that they can get to downtown New Orleans more quickly
than many who live on the East Bank.
The Point is also home to a number of locally owned restaurants; music clubs and cafés;
and, over the past few years, music festivals, art and farmers' markets, home tours, and oth-
er events have attracted locals and visitors alike.
Begin at the Algiers-Canal Street ferry landing. If you've taken the ferry
from downtown New Orleans, you've already noticed the spectacular view of
the city's skyline. If you've traveled by car, walk to the top of the levee and
take in its beauty. Also at the top of the levee is the Jazz Walk of Fame, a pro-
ject of the New Orleans Jazz National Historic Park. The paved walkway fea-
tures tributes to such jazz greats as Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Martin, and
Al Hirt. Jazz plays an important role in the history of Algiers Point, with
countless musicians having made their homes in this West Bank community.
