New Orleans is home to myriad colleges and universities, but none are as stunning as the
campuses of Tulane and Loyola Universities, which front historic St. Charles Avenue
across from Audubon Park in a neighborhood of stately, jaw-dropping mansions.
Chartered in 1912, Loyola University New Orleans is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and uni-
versities in the United States. Spread out over 24 acres, it boasts an 11:1 student ratio and
five colleges: business, humanities and natural sciences, law, music and fine arts, and social
sciences.
Tulane, one of the nation's preeminent research universities, was founded as the Medical
College of Louisiana in 1834, eventually merging with the public University of Louisiana.
It debuted as the private Tulane University in 1884 when benefactor Paul Tulane, a wealthy
merchant, donated more than $1 million in land, cash, and securities “for the promotion
and encouragement of intellectual, moral, and industrial education.” Tulane's academic di-
visions include architecture, social work, business, science and engineering, medicine, law,
liberal arts, and public health and tropical medicine. In the fall of 2014, Tulane unveiled its
newest gem: Yulman Stadium, bringing Green Wave football back to campus after a
40-year absence.
Tulane and Loyola enjoy a harmonious relationship. The two schools host many joint pro-
grams, and students with meal plans can dine at either campus.
Start at the north corner of St. Charles at Calhoun Street. Loyola's Commu-
nications/Music Complex is to the right. The 115,000-square-foot structure is
one of Loyola's newer, more modern buildings. It houses the College of Music
and Fine Arts, the School of Mass Communication, and the Louis J. Roussel
Performance Hall, Loyola's largest performance venue.
