halfway point of the Freret food crawl. Village Coffee offers a nice selection
of pastries, salads, sandwiches, and coffee drinks, and its free Wi-Fi makes it
an ideal study hall for students from nearby Tulane and Loyola Universities.

Walk two blocks to the 5000 block of Freret. At the corner is La Nuit Com-
edy Theatre, which stages a variety of shows featuring some of the city's best
comic talent. The club also offers improvisation, sketch writing, and chil-
dren's acting classes. Also in this block is Pure Cake, which since opening in
2012 has won raves for its wedding cakes, mini-cakes, and cake pops, includ-
ing flavors such as praline and bananas Foster. At Liberty Cheesesteak, the
owners—including a native Philadelphian—serve up authentic Philly
cheesesteaks (with onions and Cheez Whiz). Variations include a Cajun
Chick Steak and a Steak Hoagie.

Cross Robert Street. At the end of the block is Cure, the craft-cocktail bar
whose owners get much of the credit for the Freret Street revival (see side-
bar).

As you make your way back to Napoleon, you'll pass three more restaurants:
Midway Pizza, known for its deep-dish pie; Beaucoup Juice, where you can
get fresh-juice snow balls, veggie juices, and smoothies with such names as
Mardi Gras Mango, Chuck Berry, and The Tipitina (a mixture of strawber-
ries, peaches, bananas, honey, and soy milk); and Freret Street Po-Boy and
Donut Shop, whose signature items are actually fried-seafood platters and
Creole red beans and rice.
