Using Transparency
Many digital painting programs have options to affect the flow or transparency of brushes.
These are incredibly useful settings that allow for subtle tonal changes or precise color addi-
tions. In Figure 6.20, the brush is set to a transparency level of 46 percent in Photoshop;
scribbling with it a few times shows how you can lay down tones additively with it.
Another useful brush element common to many digi-
tal painting programs is brush hardness. This setting
makes a brush progressively more transparent from the
center outward, giving the brush a fuzzy-looking edge
(Figure 6.21).
Transparency and hardness are incredibly powerful
when used together. A large, transparent, soft brush can
be used to create white puffy clouds in a background
painting or add subtle tones to an image. These types of
brushes can also be used to add fogginess to a landscape
painting.
When it comes to brush options, there are few limits.
It is outside of the scope of this topic to list them all.
However, each digital painting program listed earlier in
the chapter has its own unique features that you should
explore. Master them and you will go far in digital
painting.
