While Corel has a great many features, it is also one of the most expensive digital paint-
ing programs on the market today, with the program costing upward of $450. Still, you
are paying for industry leading software, with each new version adding exciting new
features.
ArtRage Studio Pro Another interesting program is ArtRage Studio Pro. This program
simulates real paint like Corel and the open source MyPaint, and it is available for
Windows, Mac, and iPad. Called the “next big thing” for digital painting in some trade
magazines, ArtRage Studio Pro goes beyond simply simulating the look of real-world
media by also simulating their behavior. Oil brushes require users (by default, but these
features can be turned off) to lift their tablet pens or reclick the mouse as though they
are putting more paint on the bristles. Watercolor brushes require users to clean previous
paint off the brush if they do not wish colors to mix. Although this sounds time-consum-
ing, it produces remarkably realistic results that have the texture of real paint and can be
difficult to discern from the real thing. Figure 6.4 shows an in-progress ArtRage Studio
Pro painting with some of the program features in use. This figure shows the use of refer-
ence images and tracing from sketches.
Paints in ArtRage Studio Pro also mix and smudge realistically, yielding remarkable results
for the user who knows how to manage the media. Added to this are a selection of stencils
and realistic canvas options, so artists familiar with traditional media will feel right at
home. For artists with the time and ability to work in traditional media, ArtRage Studio
Pro is a good option.
