There are other methods for estimating cut and fill quantities. They
include the grid method and the average end-area method. The grid
method is useful for estimating pool, pond, and building excavation. The
average end-area method is commonly used for estimating earthwork
volumes for roads and linear features. In this method a series of cross
sections are made at set intervals of 10, 25, and 50 or 100 feet, depending
on the complexity of the terrain. The curious student could investigate
the various methods of calculating cut and fill and compare their results.
In actual practice, most professional offices use computer software to
make the calculations. The use of the contour method for calculating cut
and fill quantities is a quick and easy method for checking accuracy or
when computing is not available.
