Figure 15.5 Earthwork quantities are calculated
in cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
Figure 15.6 Overlapping contours showing
fill. Contours that are moved downhill are fill,
those moved uphill are indicating cut.
Using a 20-scale ruler, measure the number of square inches of
the shaded area created by the 55 contour overlapping the 54 contour:
1.5 square inches.
3.
Calculate number of square feet:
Multiply the number of square inches (let's estimate 1.5 square inches) by
the square of 20 or 20' × 20' = 400' × 1.5 = 600 square feet
4.
Calculate number of cubic feet:
First note the contour interval of the grading plan. In this case it is
1 foot.
600 square feet ×1 = 600 cubic feet
5.
Calculate number of cubic yards:
600 cubic feet / 27 = 22.2 cubic yards
6.
Calculate cubic yards for remaining contours.
It is desirable to organize your earthwork volume calculations.
One way to organize oneself is to set up a spreadsheet such as shown in
Table 15.1.
