IntroductIon
If you look at a grading plan and technical section, you will notice they contain
both contours and spot elevations. The contours graphically represent sculp-
tural landform design intent, while spot elevations communicate precise eleva-
tions at critical locations on the plan and in the sections. Think of contours as
two-dimensional visual clay. The shape and flow of the contours and the dis-
tances between them help us visualize the landforms they represent.
When Are Spot elevAtIonS needed?
The number of spot elevations that are needed in any one plan is not a fixed
number, nor is the number based on any calculation. Generally spot elevations
are needed to provide greater elevation specificity on sloping paved surfaces,
