Referring to Figure 9.14, we will calculate the slope between three sets
of contours. The drawing was prepared at 40 scale, where 1 inch =
40 feet.

Set A contours are 80 and 81. The measured distance (plan was
drawn at 40 scale) between them is one inch or 40 feet.
S = 1' / 40'
S = .025 or 2.5%
Set B contours are 79 and 80. The measured distance between
them is .5 inch or 20 feet.
S = 1' / 20'
S = .05 or 5%
