Section and plan views are shown in Figure 7.17, with the horizontal
dimension between contours identified by the letter H. When calculating
the slope of a surface (level or inclined), divide the elevation difference
between two points or series of contours in a plan by their horizontal
distance. For instance, if the horizontal difference between contours 100
and 106 (as measured on the plan, if it were drawn to scale) is 20 feet,
then the slope in percent is 6/20 = .0333, or 3.3%
