Table 8 lists the inpatients with fractures who are taking medications for osteoporosis.
With the exception of patients #6 and 12, these patients are on the high end of the number of doses.
It suggests that patients with osteoporosis, and patients who have broken bones because of it are more
diligent in taking their medication compared to patients who are taking it as a preventative medication.
We can see if this remains the case for outpatient visits for fractures (Table 9).
There is a red flag on the 156 doses of Fosamax®. These patients are getting far more than is reason-
able, and their physicians are ignoring prescription guidelines. And yet, it is very interesting that patients
with fractures and problems related to osteoporosis are the ones taking the high doses. It would be of
interest to determine whether patients who are taking the medications just as a preventative measure
to avoid osteoporosis are the ones with limited compliance compared to patients who already have the
disease, and who have complications related to the disease. It is said that “an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure”. However, if the patients don't accept the prevention, it will do little good.

Kernel density remains a rarely used technique in the medical literature to investigate population dis-
tributions. One of the reasons for this is that few statistical software packages include it as a technique.
When it is used in a Medline article (an article in a medical journal indexed by Medline as provided by
