are quite similar. This is not unreasonable, since most women who are hospitalized for childbirth are, in
fact, quite healthy and do not have many co-morbidities. Healthier women are more likely to become
pregnant and to give birth, especially since women with severe diseases such as cancer are often advised
to terminate the pregnancy in order to treat their own diseases.
Therefore, we will remove all patients related to childbirth and re-evaluate the remaining patients.
In order to do this, we first look to the procedure codes. Codes from 72 through 75 represent obstetric
procedures; we filter out all patients with these procedures. Then we again examine the most frequent
codes in the two groups of patients, those with four or fewer listed, and those with five or more. Table
11 shows the revised list of diagnosis codes. For patients with five or more codes, the list in Table 11
changes only slightly; for 4 or fewer codes, it changes considerably.
