For a Charlson Index of 12, 62% of the patients have ten diagnosis codes. The largest percentage of
patients with ten codes is 70% for a Charlson Index of 11. Recall that as the Charlson Index increases to
12 and 13, the overall severity as identified by patient outcomes actually decreases because the weights
for HIV are too great.
While we know the relationship of the number of codes to the severity indices, we also need to
examine the relationship to the patient outcomes. In particular, we want to determine the relationship
between the number of codes and mortality, length of stay, and total charges. Table 9 examines the
number of codes to mortality. Figures 5 and 6 examine the kernel density estimates of charges and stay
by the number of diagnosis codes.
The highest proportion of patients who died had no diagnosis codes. Beyond that, the mortality rate
increases with the number of diagnosis codes, suggesting that the number of codes is representative of
the patient's severity.
