if there is a shift to a more severe category as the number of diagnosis codes increases, independent of
the actual severity of the patient's condition.
An APRDRG code of 0 indicates that the patient cannot be classified. Note that 99% of all patients
with just one diagnosis code are in APRDRG code 1, regardless of the actual severity of that code. The
probability of APRDRG class 4 increases to a high of 7+% if the patient has all ten diagnosis codes,
regardless of what those codes represent. Similarly, the probability of codes 2,3, and 4 increase as the
number of diagnosis codes increases. In fact, 75% of all patients in APRDRG class 4 have ten codes
identified. While it might be assumed that patients with more codes are more severe, we will examine
this level in detail.
For the severity index, the trend is even more pronounced with the severity class 1 ranging from a
high of 94% for two diagnosis codes to a low of 9% for all ten diagnosis codes with 76% of all patients in
