ers and to define an index of patient severity. A defined index can be used with predictive modeling to
determine patients most at risk for a specific disease; in particular, we can predict for a specific nosoco-
mial illness in order to prevent the outcome from occurring. We showed one example here; others can
be considered as well. In particular, text mining can be used to predict the risk of patient falls, and of
medication errors so that prevention can also be used to reduce such adverse events.
One of the biggest problems with defining such indices is that they do not give similar or consistent
results. Therefore, the use of the technique of text mining to define patients at highest risk for nosoco-
mial infection allows validation by comparing the index to outcomes. In addition, the relationship of a
severity index to patient outcomes allows for validation when the outcomes are not used to define the
index, as is the case with text mining techniques.
