In terms of mortality, there is a natural ordering in the ten defined clusters, 10<7<2<4<6<5<8<9<1<3.
Consider cluster 3 with anemia, dehydration, liver and heart disease, and asthma. These patients have
multiple and severe co-morbidities. Note that anemia and asthma are not contained within the list of
Charlson Index conditions, although liver and heart disease are included.
Similarly, the patients in cluster 1 mostly have severe heart disease with no non-heart related co-
morbidities. In contrast, cluster 10 is related to complications of pregnancy and delivery that will very
seldom result in death. None of the diagnoses in cluster 10 are included in the Charlson Index. Patients
in cluster 7 have serious mental disorders; severe depression can result in suicide. Again, none of the
conditions are included in the Charlson Index. Cluster 8 also has mental disorders that accompany some
difficult physical problems.
Table 3 gives the summary statistics for length of stay and total charges. Note the ordering of the clusters,
2<10<6<7<1<4<9<5<3<8 for length of stay. For total charges, the order is 2<10<7<4<9<8<6<5<1<3.
