Because of the simplicity of the model, it is clear that level 5 mortality is the threshold to predict
mortality. However, because of the severity of the patients, a high proportion of them already exist in
level 5; this indicates that those patients in level 5 will be predicted for mortality. The predicted mortal-
ity is given in Table 19, compared to the actual mortality by hospital. We can compare these results to
those from previous chapters.
Table 20 shows the relationship of the predicted mortality as given in Table 19 above to the actual
proportion of patients in mortality index level 5 by hospital as listed in Table 17. The two columns are
identical. Shifting patients into this level will increase the predicted mortality and improve the ranking
of the provider.
These rankings are considerably different from those defined using the APRDRG indices (Table
21). Rank #1 from APRDRG becomes rank #9 for Resource Demand Level. Therefore, there is still the
