probability of a stay costing between $20,000 and $30,000 is greater for level 3 compared to level 5 as
well. The results are similar to those using the resource mortality level.
However, compared to both the Charlson Index and the APRDRG Index, the overall probability for a
stay of greater than 10 days is less for patients overall, indicating that this disease staging index is good
for patients with generally less severity while the other two measures will better account for patients
with much higher levels of severity. In other words, the disease staging indices do not help to predict
the outcomes for the outlier patients.
