comParIsons of tHe resource demand level to PatIent outcomes
There are a number of proprietary indices that are based upon resource utilization. The NIS dataset
contains such an index developed by Medstat. There are four different scales: length of stay, mortality,
resource demand level, and the stage of principal disease category. We will focus on the first three levels
in this chapter. We will first look at the relationship of the resource demand level to patient outcomes.
comparisons in the nIs data
We will compare this index to the Charlson and APRDRG indices that were defined in Chapters 5 and
6. Since the NIS data has all three indices, we can make direct comparisons. Again, we want to see if
there is any consistency in the definition of severity, or if patients can be identified as severe depending
upon the choice of the index.
