level of 3. Greater than a level of three indicates a prediction of mortality. It indicates that 3 is used as
the threshold value, and the predicted mortality will be quite high.
By scoring the data, we can define the difference between the actual and predicted value (Table 11).
Note that with a threshold value of 3 rather than 4, the predicted values shown in Table 8 are quite high.
The trend continues here; a hospital with mortality zero has the lowest ranking and the hospital with
the highest mortality level of 4.78 ranks seventh. Table 12 examines the mortality index in relationship
to the procedures 36.1x.
Table 12 shows that approximately one third of the patients are in APRDRG category 1 and another
third are in category 2 with the remaining split between categories 2 and 3. It does appear that 3616 is
somewhat less severe compared to some of the other procedures, having the highest proportion in cat-
egory 1. Procedures 3613 and 3614 have the highest proportion in category 4. Procedure 3612 is next
with almost 8% in category 4. In contrast, almost half (occasionally more) of the patients are in severity
category 2 as shown in Table 13, with almost another third in category 3. Procedures 3612, 3613, and
