Considering that the average stay is equal to 9.7, the average squared error is approximately 64, or
approximately 8 days, which is less than the value of the mean. As the regression model has approxi-
mately the same error value, we also examine that model (Figure 28).
The p-value is statistically significant, but the r 2 value is only 0.0979, indicating that the model remains
a relatively poor fit. Note that age, race, and the Charlson index are statistically significant.
future trends
In the past, measures of quality have been taken too much for granted. Now that reimbursements are
becoming dependent upon these rankings, it is essential to scrutinize the methodology to ensure that the
definition of ranking actually provides a ranking of quality that is reasonable and valid.
