used in the models in Chapter 4. The optimal model for mortality is a neural network model. The lift
function (Figure 25) shows that the model can predict up through the 50 th decile.
We look at the predicted versus actual values for mortality (Table 31). Given the values in Table 31,
four hospitals have a predictive mortality of zero. Therefore, these hospitals will rank lower than any
of the other hospitals. The two hospitals with the greatest differential are #10 and #3, so they will rank
high in quality even though hospital #3 also has the highest actual mortality. Yet it is hospital 5 that has
the greatest proportion of patients in the highest Charlson level; yet it has a moderate actual mortality
level.
We also examine length of stay by hospital and Charlson Index. The optimal predictive model is a
decision tree (Figure 26). The first split is on sex followed by age, and then by level of Charlson Index.
The hospital code is not included in the tree model. The average error is given in Figure 27.
