We could also have defined cutpoint levels in the frequency of mortality to define a series of weights
for this New Index. Table 21 shows the relationship of this new index to mortality.
Note that as the index increases, so does the level of mortality to a peak at index level 10. Figure 13
show the relationship. Note that the curve is very smooth, with each higher index level having a cor-
respondingly higher mortality rate. Moreover, the rate accelerates as the index increases. It follows a
natural curve that can be modeled.
