In-Depth Information
was bowled over by everything Provençal—the sun, bright colors, rugged landscape, and
raw people. For the next two years he painted furiously, cranking out a masterpiece every
few days.
None of the 200-plus paintings that Van Gogh did in the south can be found today
in the city that so moved him. But you can walk the same streets he knew and see places
he painted, marked by about a dozen steel-and-concrete “ easels, ” with photos of the fi-
nal paintings for then-and-now comparisons. The TI has a €1 brochure that locates all the
easels (those described in this topic are easily found without the brochure). Small stone
markers with yellow accents embedded in the pavement lead to the easels.
• Take a walk in Vincent's footsteps (roughly north to south through Arles' center) and
watch his paintings come to life by putting yourself in his shoes (use the map on here ) .
Start at Place Lamartine and find the stone easel by the grass with the big Monoprix to
your right.
