Millau Bridge (Viaduc de Millau)
Completed in 2005, this sleek, futuristic 1.5-mile-long suspension bridge, which shoots
across the Tarn River Valley, is the world's highest at 885 feet. A modern-day Pont du
Gard, the Millau Bridge was built as a critical link in the A-75 autoroute, which connects
Paris with the Mediterranean and Barcelona. A quarter-million tons of concrete were used
to set the supporting pillars, with the tallest rising 1,125 feet—taller than the Eiffel Tower
(in fact, it was built by the same construction company that erected the Eiffel Tower in
1889). The bridge's British architect, Lord Norman Foster, also designed London's egg-
shaped City Hall, as well as Berlin's dazzling Reichstag Parliament dome. There's a visit-
ors center on the northern end of the bridge with sensational views, and another below the
bridge, at the southern end (both open daily, tel. 05 65 59 42 86, current car toll about €7,
or €9 in July-Aug; bridge is 70 miles northeast of Albi on A-75).
