In-Depth Information
Notice the signs as you enter towns indicating the jours du marché —essential
information to any civilized soul, and a reminder not to park on the streets the night
before ( stationnement interdit means “no parking”).
Most marchés take place once a week in the town's main square and, if large
enough, spill onto nearby streets. Markets combine fresh produce; samples of wine
and other locally produced beverages (such as brandies and ciders); and a smatter-
ing of nonperishable items, such as knives, berets, kitchen goods, and cheap cloth-
ing. The bigger the market, the greater the overall selection—particularly for non-
perishable goods. Bigger towns (such as Beaune and Arles) may have two weekly
markets.Thebiggestmarketdaysareusuallyonweekends,sothateveryonecango.
