Carved like an amphitheater into the bowl of a limestone hill, St-Emilion's tidy
streets connect a few inviting squares with heavy cobbles and scads of well-stocked wine
shops. There's little to do in this town of well-heeled and well-wined residents other than
enjoythesetting,and, biensûr ,samplethelocalsauce.WinehasbeengoodtoSt-Emilion,
though it accounts for barely 5 percent of Bordeaux's famous red-wine production. Also
try a tasty homemade macaron, sold at many shops. Sunday is market day in St-Emilion.

Tourist Information
The enterprising TI is a critical stop, at the top of the town on Place des Créneaux,
across from the town's highest bell tower. It's located in a onetime abbey and connected
to pretty cloisters (these go ignored by most tourists—find the door in the rear of the
TI). The TI is well-armed with good information in English (daily mid-June-mid-Sept
9:30-19:00, mid-Sept-mid-June 9:30-12:30 & 13:30-18:30 except Nov-March closes at
