Getting There: LeaveSarlatontheCarsac-boundroad(D-704),goaboutsevenkilo-
meters in the direction of Carsac, turn left at the cement plant, and follow Bouyssou signs
until you reach the farm.
Château de Commarque
This mystical medieval castle ruin is ripe for hikers wanting to get away from it all. From
the remote and secluded parking lot, it's a 20-minute walk down through a forest of chest-
nuttreestoaclearing,wherethemostlyruinedcastleappears...likeamirage.Paytheentry
fee, pick up the English brochure, and you're free to scour the sight. The main event is the
castle, but you'll also discover the remains of a chapel and several other buildings. Owner
Hubert de Commarque bought the castle in 1968 and has been digging it out of the forest
ever since. During the summer, you may see archaeology students doing excavating work.
Cost and Hours: €7, daily May-Sept 10:00-19:00, until 20:00 in July-Aug, April
10:00-18:00, closed Oct-March, last entry one hour before closing, WCs back at the park-

Getting There: From Sarlat, follow signs to Les Eyzies, then follow the D-6 to Mar-
quay. As you pass through Marquay, keep right, following Commarque signs, then go

Maison Forte de Reignac
For over 700 years, a powerful lord ruled from this unusual home carved from a rock face
highabovetheVézèreRiver.Afterashortbutsteephiketotheentry,you'llclimbthrough
several floors of well-furnished rooms, some with lit fireplaces. Kids love this tree house
of a place. Your tour concludes in a room that houses torture devices and highlights man's
creative abilities to inflict unthinkable pain...and a slow death. You'll see full-size models
ofinterrogation chairs, aspike-covered rack,aguillotine, andawarden'scorset. Theloan-
