▲▲▲ Château de Castelnaud
This crumbling castle looks less mighty than Château de Beynac (across the river), but
it packs a powerful medieval punch. Now a museum devoted to medieval warfare, every
room in the château has a story to tell. Several rooms display weaponry and artifacts from
the Hundred Years' War, and others have videos (with English subtitles), interactive com-
puters (in English), and castle models. The whole experience is designed to teach you
about daily castle life, from the battlefield (armory) to the dinner table (kitchen). The up-
per courtyard has a 150-foot-deep well (drop a pebble). The rampart views are as unbeat-
able as the siege machines are formidable. Pick up the free, essential English explana-
tions and—unless you are in battle-ready condition—follow the signs for the Circuit Fa-
cile (easy route), then Suite de la Visite, which avoids a long and dicey climb up the tower
and brings you straight to the heart of the castle.
