Getting There: YoucangettoChevernybybusfromBlois(see“BloisConnections”
on here ) , or by shuttle bus or minivan tour from Amboise (see “Amboise Connections” on
here ) .
Visiting the Château: Asyouwalkacrossthemanicuredgroundstowardthegleam-
ing château, the sound of hungry hounds will follow you. Lined up across the facade are
sculpted medallions with portraits of Roman emperors, including Julius Caesar (above the
others in the center). As you enter the château, pick up the excellent English self-guided
tour brochure, which describes the interior beautifully.
Your visit starts in the lavish dining room, decorated with leather walls and a sump-
tuous ceiling. Next, as you climb the stairs to the private apartments, look out the win-
dow and spot the orangerie across the gardens. It was here that the Mona Lisa was hidden
(along with other treasures from the Louvre) during World War II.
On the top floor, turn right from the stairs and tour the I-could-live-here family
apartments with silky bedrooms, kids' rooms, and an intimate dining room. On the other
side of this floor is the impressive Arms Room with weapons, a sedan chair, and a snare
