Pronunciation Guide for Place Names
When using the phonetics: Try to nasalize the n sound (let the sound come through your
nose). Note that the “ahn” combination uses the “ah” sound in “father,” but the “an” com-
bination uses the “a” sound in “sack.” Pronounce the “ ī ” as the long “i” in “light.” If your
best attempt at pronunciation meets with a puzzled look, just point to the place name on
the list.
