In-Depth Information
Road speeds are monitored regularly with camera boxes (a mere two kilometers over
the limit gets a pricey ticket). The good news is that drivers are warned a few hundred
yards before the camera with signs showing the proper speed, so you have no excuse
for blowing it. Look for a sign with a radar graphic that says Pour votre sécurité, con-
trôles automatiques . Anyone caught driving over the limit will be fined a minimum of
about $180, though the French use these cameras not to make money but to slow down
traffic—and it works.
Don't Drink and Drive: The French are serious about curbing drunk driving. Soon
all motorists, including those in rental cars, will be required to have a breath-testing in-
strument on hand so that the drivers themselves can tell if they're over the legal alcohol
limit—which is lower in France than in the US (drinker beware). If drivers are pulled over
for any reason and don't have the kit in their car, they'll be fined (driver beware). When
you pick up your rental car, ask if it has a kit (if it doesn't, ask where you can get one,
which should cost only around €3).
